Week 2. January 6-12. Things to do in Calgary!

    We wanted to thank you all for an amazing 2013, and wish you and your loved ones a happy and prosperous 2014!  As expected, Calgary is starting off the new year with a bang – musicals, photography exhibits, kids stuff and, of course, our favourite NHL team – the Calgary Flames continue to entertain the C of Red!     Unbridled – a solo exhibition of Cathy Simone’s equine photography, presented during the Exposure Photography Festival. Unbridled celebrates the essence of the horse and the spirit within. Through beauty, movement and form in unconditional freedom, Simone visually expresses and creatively explores quintessential nature to engage audience and evoke emotional response. This collection of poetic narratives represents Simone’s passion and respect for horses and the art of photography: digital capture processed with the principles and aesthetics of traditional practice with the ambition of providing insight into these majestic beings and their fantastic attributes of character.     The 28th annual High Performance Rodeo. Thursday, January 9 – Saturday, February 1, 2014. Price: Various

    The 28th annual High Performance Rodeo, Calgary’s International Festival of the Arts returns January 9 to February 1, 2014 at various venues throughout Calgary and will feature a collection of the boldest and the brightest artists from the realms of theatre, dance, comedy, music and visual arts.     The Music Man. The Musical.  University Theatre (Craigie Hall; 200 University Court NW) Thursday, January 9 – Friday, January 17, 2014 – 7:00pm

    THE MUSIC MAN is the story of suave, fast-talking travelling salesman Harold Hill who cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band he vows to organize – this despite the fact he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef.  This multiple Tony award-winning, critically acclaimed Broadway classic has it all—thanks to its quirky characters, charmingly predictable dramatic situations, and one-of-a-kind, nostalgic score of rousing marches, barbershop quartets and sentimental ballads which have become popular standards.

    This event is the Canadian Motorcycle and ATV industries’ showcase of all the new 2014 makes and models. The Show kicks off with SHE Rides Nite and there will be an MX Freestyle Show featuring Team Empire Stunt team, the Yamaha Riding Academy where kids aged 6-12 can ride right at the show, Vintage Motorcycle displays and all the newest in apparel, accessories and touring destinations.     The Science Centre’s new travelling exhibition, Nature Unleashed: Inside Natural Disasters, explores the science behind these events and our human responses to living with them. Come experience the impact of earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and yes, even floods! Real artifacts and specimens, large multi‑media experiences and engaging interactive exhibits will allow you to come face-to-face with the inside of a tornado, and even create your own volcano or earthquake.
