The Mountain View Connection closes its concert season with A Classic Klezmer, a journey into a musical world of beauty and exoticism. Klezmer is the traditional instrumental music of the East European Jews, performed at weddings and other celebrations. Violinists Diane Lane and Anita Dusevic Oliva, CPO violist Michael Bursey, cellist Olena Kilchyk, and clarinetists Cédric Blary and Tony Park join artistic directors and pianists Kathleen van Mourik and Charles Foreman for a programme of Klezmer inspired music including Srul Irving Glick’s “Klezmer Wedding”, Prokofieff’s “Overture on Hebrew Themes”, “Klezmer in Granada” by Winnipeg composer Sid Rabinovich and Ernest Bloch’s first “Piano Quintet”. The concerts take place in the beautiful historic Lougheed House, an impressive sandstone mansion built in 1891. And as usual, at intermission the audience will be entertained by a lovely reception catered by The Restaurant at the Lougheed House and given a chance to explore the house.

Vecova, home of Calgary’s only not-for-profit Bottle Depot invites you to our World Environment Day celebration from 11am – 2pm, Thursday the 5th of June 2014. Vecova is diverting recyclable beverage containers from the landfill and creating jobs for persons with disabilities with our newest Social Enterprise – Bottle Pick-Up Service. In 2012, Albertans bought 2.35 billion beverage containers and 17.6% were not returned for a refund. In Canada, the employment rate for persons with disabilities is 53.5% compared to 75.1% for persons without disabilities. Over the past year, Vecova’s Bottle Pick-Up collected 370,000 empties and created 3 jobs for persons with disabilities. We signed up 1700 customers who love the convenience of pick-up at their door and getting a tax receipt! We are celebrating our success on World Environment Day – June 5. The event will feature Calgary Food Trucks, Recycling Displays as well as a few speeches from dignitaries and some of the people our service has touched. Vecova was founded in 1969 and has been improving the quality of life for persons with disabilities ever since. Vecova Bottle Depot Pick-Up was started last year to help support our charity while creating jobs for persons with disabilities. It has been a great success and we are proud to celebrate with our community.
